Southern California Counseling Center
“Each year, the School-Based Program here at SCCC provides mental health services for about 100 LAUSD students. Faced with constant budget cuts, schools are often forced to eliminate mental health services, and these students may not otherwise have access to much-needed counseling. Our counselors have the opportunity to be a consistent presence in a student’s life, and this resource can be life-changing, as Lindsay speaks to below:
“This year I had the incredible opportunity to work as a counselor at a local high school in Los Angeles. The teenagers in our communities face challenges that are overwhelming in scope—in addition to the pressures of grades and social struggles, the kids I saw were also navigating the foster care system; dealing with the realities of being undocumented or living in homes with undocumented parents; facing racial inequities, past sexual abuse and trauma, and managing anxiety and depression disorders.
Yet with all of their challenges, I marvel at how much resilience, joy, and forgiveness these teens were capable of showing. One student who suffers from extreme anxiety was able to find ways to integrate art, mindfulness techniques and somatic interventions (the butterfly tap!) to help regulate her anxiety at home and school. Another boy used therapy to express all of the fear, disappointment, and sadness he could otherwise not show in his daily life. By the end of the school year he was able to express to his parents how much pain he was feeling and elicit more help and support at home.
I have learned that teenagers are some of the best clients a therapist can have. All of my teens were self-referred, meaning they chose to spend their time once a week in counseling. Each student showed up open, vulnerable and committed to better understanding themselves and the world around them. It was not always an easy task, however it was certainly the most rewarding. There is no better way to directly impact our communities than to listen to the hearts and minds of our teenagers and offer the compassion, skills, and encouragement they need to become unique, powerful, and healthy members of our beautifully diverse and shared city of Los Angeles.”

South County Outreach
South County Outreach has some great success stories of how they are helping those in their community. Here is Marian’s Story
“I attended the South County Outreach Computer Learning Lab, having found out about this valuable resource through the Irvine One Stop center. I had been unemployed for quite some time after taking a buyout from a company where I had worked for approximately 20 years.
When the recession hit, it hit me hard. In my prior employment I always had a secretarial assistant who devised Excel charts, edited long drafts, formatted documents, prepared labels, and did all the myriad tasks an office assistant performs. There I was. The way of the world had changed around me, even high-level executives were now creating their own Excel documents and were proficient in Word.
Help for me came in the form of the Learning Lab. Not only was the content of the workbooks so outstanding, combining readable understandable information, included were remedial sections, clear diagrams and most of all practical examples of the computer program we were learning.
Beyond the remarkably put-together manuals, the teachers – all of whom are volunteers – were incredibly giving of their time, knowledge, patience, and understanding, not just regarding the subject matter, but they additionally acted with sincerity toward the students, most of whom were out of work, job hunting perhaps feeling vulnerable and sensitive.
And lastly, the fellow classmates; so supportive, kind, whether they were below or above the level where I was in the learning curve, they were willing to help, say a supportive word and just be there for me and the others.
Then, when I prepared my resume after having completed the series of computer lessons at the Learning Lab, I could seriously and truthfully add to my skills, all the programs I had learned.
Without question, I would not have the job I loce today if I had not added those skills to my experience. Honestly, I owe a lot to the South County Outreach Learning Lab.
Thank you.”

Meet Carlos, Age 9
“I found out about the DancEd Steps Up program at career day when Mrs. Cindy came over and got me to think about it. It made me feel a little more confident to start dancing because she told me I had a lot of potential. When Mrs. Cindy told me that the program wasn’t just for girls it was also for boys, I was convinced to do the audition.
I’ve enjoyed being able to dance in an artistic way and to be able to dance with other people. I like to be artistic, and I like to create new moves at home, but I’m shy to do it in front of a lot of people. I took YMCA hip hop, but only once a month. I even practiced at home with my own moves. I felt blessed when Mrs. Cindy told me I could take any class I was interested in. I’ve always wanted to learn how to jump high like ballet dancers, and now I have a chance.
I didn’t think I was going to be able to do any type of dance because of the money. So when I found out I was accepted, I was super excited! I felt special, like I was famous because I would get to dance and get to be on stage. I feel exotic because I get to dance, and not everyone gets a chance to take classes like this. I didn’t really think this could happen to me—it is like a dream come true.”

OSM Entertainment Around TownThe OSM Woodwind Quintet also plays at local community events such as the “Fireside at the Miles” concert series.
