This week, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl was interviewed by artworxLA. Here’s a snippet of her interview.
awxLA: What role does art and creativity play in your career?
SK: I began acting when I was 7. One day in class I did a skit called the “Old Sleuth” and I was supposed to be the old sleuth’s assistant. I had no lines, I just made faces. People started to laugh. The more they laughed, the more faces I made. Of course I ruined the play. But, as luck would have it, an agent sent me on an interview for the first filmed TV series, “Trouble with Father.” I got the part and, suddenly, I was a child actor. For the next fifteen years, in three TV series, I experienced the joy and the freedom of creativity.
Politics and governing are not very different. Creative energy is important.Politics and governing are not very different. Creative energy is important. What is governing but the process of identifying problems and creatively finding solutions to those problems? Adrienne Rich, a favorite poet of mine, writes ‘politics is imagination or it is a treadmill.’ Creativity is an under-recognized, but important part of the work of government, crafting imaginative solutions to problems in people’s lives.”

The mission and purpose of San Pedro City Ballet is to identify, train, and promote a world-class pre-professional dance company from the diverse population of the Los Angeles Harbor area. A program that is founded in the base of classical works and traditions, and goes beyond to explore new contemporary and original modern works and to provide training to schools throughout Los Angeles for arts education and after-school programs.
SCCC also provides one-on-one counseling services in area public schools, at no cost to the child’s family or the school for students who are struggling emotionally and socially. Their counseling staff is composed of 120 volunteer mental health interns who provide services as they work toward licensure as marriage and family therapists and psychologists in the State of California. Their work is overseen by a cadre of volunteer licensed mental health professionals from the community, many whom are alumni of the program, who donate their time and expertise to ensure the quality of services provided.
