The senior village concept was started in 1999 in the Beacon Hill area in Boston. Since then, over 140 villages have been established, and over 125 more are in development across the nation. South Bay Village, established by Ghislaine Davis and several other volunteers in 2014, started operations in May 2015, now serves Torrance and nearby surrounding areas. The Village provides services to its members to help them to remain in their own homes, while enjoying all that their familiar community has to offer.
The village is composed of several elements, all orchestrated to help senior members to continue to live full lives, while remaining in their own homes.
RowLA
What do they do at RowLA?
“ON THE ERGS
The erg (short for ergometer) is used to help the girls train. Erg workouts offer focused practice on proper body position and rowing stroke technique while training the girls in regulating athletic intensity. The RowLA girls erg almost every day and they prepare for the annual Erg Sprints Race in late January. Our ergs travel to the local middle schools in the spring for Erg Ed, a program introducing rowing to middle school students.
ON THE WATER
RowLA girls meet at Recreational Boating at Parking Lot #77 off of Mindanao Way in Marina del Rey for rowing training. Coaching is from a launch and takes place in the main channel of the marina. The competitive team practices on the water every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday afterschool from 4pm-6:15pm and on Saturday and Sunday mornings. The Novice rowers, in their first year, practice on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday afternoon plus on Saturday mornings. The middle school developmental team practices on Tuesdays from 3:30pm-5:30pm and on Saturday mornings.”

Jubilee Consortium
“After wishing a fond farewell to our 2019-2020 JYLA fellows at the close of their service term, we are so tremendously thrilled to welcome our 7 new corps members for the 2020-2021 year of service in Los Angeles! We’ve spent a week in quarantine, isolating and completing orientation, and we still have yet to really see each other’s unmasked faces… But we are so excited for the year to come and confident that – no matter the difficult circumstances of 2020 – this group is going to thrive while giving back to the L.A. community!”
IAMLA
“Check out the latest installment of Cooking at Home with the IAMLA! In this episode we examine the history behind one of Italy’s most famous staples, pasta, and demonstrate how to make it from the safety of your own kitchen!”
Families and Criminal Justice
Families and Criminal Justice’s mission is the prevention of inter-generational crime and incarceration. This is information on one of their projects called “The Miracle Project”
“In partnership with the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the MIRACLE Project serves pregnant, jailed mothers and their families.
In the jail, MIRACLE provides prenatal, infant and child development education classes; family life and family resource management education; mothers’ support groups; sentencing and child custody advocacy; and social-recreational activities. In the community, MIRACLE serves the families of formerly-incarcerated mothers, providing home-based doula services, infant/child development education and case management. Families may receive MIRACLE services for up to 3 years after the mother’s release from incarceration.
MIRACLE outcomes include significant decreases in premature births, low birth weight babies and neonatal hospitalizations. MIRACLE mothers have decreased rates of postpartum depression, longer inter-pregnancy intervals and a 5% rate of recidivism. MIRACLE families achieve sustained reunification, with less than 2% experiencing the removal of a child to foster care.”
