OCLA

October 8, 2024

OCLA® helps anyone who is homeless or struggling to avoid homelessness find the services they need to improve their life circumstance.

Los Angeles County is home to a staggering number of individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Over 66,000 people are sleeping in the streets, in tents, or in homeless shelters every night, while thousands more are sleeping in their cars or vans. In January 2020, nearly 19,000 vehicles, tents and makeshift shelters were “home” for thousands of LA County residents. This number fails to include the thousands more who are living in tents, vehicles, on streets or in shelters in Pasadena, Glendale and Long Beach.

October 7, 2024

  • I get to do things I have never done before. I get to plant fruits and vegetables. I get to use garden tools: a rake, a shovel, a cultivator, and a wheelbarrow. – Carlos

  • I learn about compost, the map to learn about the ocean, Mesopotamia. We learn water facts, parts of the soil, and the flowers. – Brianna

  • I like coming to the garden because I learn how to grow fruits and vegetables. – Kevin

Our Big Kitchen LA

HOW WE DO IT

Screen Shot 2022-09-21 at 4.24.02 PM.png

At OBKLA, we are passionate about providing the best possible experience for both our volunteers and those in need.

We believe in empowering volunteers to make a difference and inspiring them to keep doing good beyond our kitchen.

Good food is a basic right, and we are dedicated to preparing restaurant-quality meals using only Kosher ingredients, all under a seasoned chef’s guidance.

Our goal is to make our volunteers feel valued and proud of their impact. Our kitchen is inviting, and we aim to create a joyful atmosphere for everyone who enters.

OUR PEOPLE

At OBKLA, we believe that food has the power to bring people together, breaking down barriers and uniting us as one community. That’s why we’re so grateful to have a diverse group of supporters – from generous sponsors to the hard-working staff and volunteers to dedicated community members and an independent  Board of Directors – all working together to make OBKLA a reality.

Comprised of experts from the business world, legal profession, and community organizations, our  Board serves as a cornerstone of our organization, providing guidance and oversight to ensure that OBKLA continues to make a meaningful impact on those in need. With their expertise and commitment, we can ensure that OBKLA remains a thriving, effective, community-based organization for years to come.

OPICA

September 24, 2024

“We are dedicated to creating a nurturing environment that combats isolation and offers respite for family caregivers, all while keeping costs below our actual expenses. Yet, many still cannot afford even the subsidized rates of our services.
This is where our Scholarship Program becomes a lifeline. OPICA subsidizes the cost of the program for all our members. For those who are unable to even meet these subsidized rates, we step in with scholarships to ensure they do not miss out on the care and support they require. Your assistance and partnership can make that happen!”

Marcus Foster Education Institute

September 17, 2024

We lead partners in work that advances systemic change and educational equity. We take very seriously the responsibility of supporting and engaging systems to best serve every young person in their care.

Co-creates systems change interventions that improve conditions, experiences, and outcomes for students by centering equity

Creates hubs for design thinking and strategic organizational change

Leverages relationships and influencers to catalyze action that benefits historically marginalized and underserved communities

What distinguishes our approach from other continuous improvement practices is our consistent centering of equity and focus on systems in our CI process.

To our partners who acknowledge the persistence of ineffective practices and have long yearned for real change, our equity-focused services offer practical methods and tools that result in the cultural shift and measurable improvements necessary to realize their dreams of justice.

For our clients and partners who are skeptical of the idea that achieving equity is possible, but curious and willing to try, we offer insights, experiences, and results that uncover and interrupt the status quo and challenge limiting assumptions.

For over a decade, our partnership experiences have shone a light on the barriers to change. During this time, we have honed our thinking around a concept we coined Mutual Accountability (MA). MA recognizes that diverse perspectives require common language, definitions of the problem, and definitions of success as precursors to the uncomfortable conversations that light a path to change. The intent of MA is to frontload the recognition that this work can be difficult, but also that we’ve seen that working together and through discomfort can help us get to the work that actually needs to happen. We acknowledge all of this as a precursor to and throughout a CI process.

Haven Academy of the Arts

September 10, 2024

“We ask our 5 year olds to bring their scripts to rehearsal. Why? Begin as you mean to go. Bringing your script to rehearsal and opening it to the right page is one of the building blocks they will need to be successful as they grow in our programs. Bonus: this is a precursor to reading! Just look at how cute these little professionals are!”

Kingdom Causes Bellflower

September 9, 2024

Kingdom Causes Bellflower received a grant to help support their transitional housing home, Margaret’s House. Margaret’s House is a three-unit transitional home that offers short-term (6-9 months) housing and services for low-income families with minor dependent children. Margaret’s House provides each family with case management and housing search assistance in a dignified, high-quality living experience. The mission of Kingdom Causes Bellflower is to be a catalyst that inspires, connects, and mobilizes people towards personal and community transformation. Kingdom Causes Bellflower helps people get off the street, provides support services to those at risk of homelessness, creates pathways to sustainable work through social enterprise, and offers ongoing training and education to the community.

Kingdom Causes Bellflower regularly interacts with individuals and families who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness. Outreach workers develop relationships with community members on the street, and often distribute hygiene kits. Those kits are almost exclusively assembled by volunteers, area schools, churches, and businesses. Also, every year, KCB partners with area churches and volunteers to put on a Christmas Store. While many organizations give away presents, this store allows low-income parents to buy presents at deeply discounted prices. This allows parents to maintain the dignity of purchasing presents for their children.
