Friends Of Mark Twain Middle School – Seeds To Plate Program
Each week, teachers at Mark Twain Middle School bring their students to our on-campus garden to apply their classroom lessons to interactive garden and food activities. For many students, their experience in our half-acre garden at this LAUSD Title I school is their primary connection to nature and healthy food.
Students aren’t afraid to get their hands dirty and understand how their classroom material relates to growing and eating nutritious food. We are proud of the community we have created around our small yet beautiful natural space. It’s not rare to see our students wanting to continue working and maintaining the garden during their lunchtime.
If you are interested in starting your own school garden program, please see our toolkit and lesson plans here.
Lessons include making spring rolls in celebration of the Chinese New Year, constructing canals and dams in the context of ancient civilizations, measuring plant growth for math lessons, making cheese in chemistry class, and more. We love working with our teachers to continually update our lessons to match what they are doing inside the classroom, and create a holistic learning experience.

Sages and Seekers
Sages & Seekers a grant to support their intergenerational program. They strives to combat social isolation and dissolve age-related segregation within our communities, while meeting the universal and compelling need of both young adults and elders to make sense of their lives. This is achieved by the simple art of conversation. Their three programs match up seniors (sages) with high school students (seekers) either in person or online via Zoom. Programs typically last 8 weeks and strive to increase empathy, reduce ageism, build relationship and communication skills and
help to define a sense of purpose.
Recently a Sage passed away a couple months after completing the program. The family had heard so much about her Seeker that they reached out and she spoke at the Sage’s memorial. Her description at times surpassed what the family had known or understood about her and gave them a gift of deep reflection of who their relative had been and their relationship with one another.

Kids and Horses Inc.
Kids & Horses was founded in 1999 by local businessman Sam Waldman and his wife Lorri to enhance the physical and mental well-being of children and adults who suffer from autism, cerebral palsy, Down’s syndrome and other developmental disabilities. Sam was an early-adopter of utilizing horses as a means for helping individuals with disabilities. They turned their own Double W Ranch in Minden into a center dedicated to helping people with disabilities and quickly attracted the enthusiastic support of friends, family and the community. When Mr. Waldman passed away, Lorri along with a devoted board of directors, staff, volunteers and the families resolved to carry on.
