Girls Rock Santa Barbara

November 20, 2019

“Girls Rock Santa Barbara empowers girls through music education, creative expression, and performance; promoting an environment that fosters self-confidence, creativity, and teamwork.

We challenge gender stereotypes, encourage collaboration and tolerance among peers, and provide a comfortable space for girls of all backgrounds to express themselves. Through music lessons, workshops, group activities, and performance, girls learn skills that help guide them throughout their lives.

We are working together to build a Santa Barbara where youth girls…

  • decide what it looks like and feels like to be a girl
  • trust and support each other
  • recognize the power and pleasure of their own creativity
  • use music as a powerful way to communicate and exchange ideas
  • are safe and encouraged to explore their identities
  • are able to bring every part of themselves into every moment and are continually affirmed in their wholeness
  • have their voices valued in a collective community dialogue where we decide what a safe community looks like for everyone
  • are celebrated in their state of beings

* Girls Rock Santa Barbara values difference and accepts any and all participants who identify as female, trans, and gender non-conforming.

Why Girls Rock SB?

At GRSB, we believe our girls should love the music they make and love themselves for making it. Since founding the local organization (one of many international sisters to the original Portland-based Rock ‘n’ Roll Camp for Girls) in 2014, Executive Director Jen Baron and her dedicated team of staff and volunteers have made sure that young girls don’t miss the chance to strum, pound, rip, and scream if they want.

Why? Because it’s fun and we deserve it.

At the end of the day, it really has nothing to do with the fact that we finally nailed that chord or drum solo. It’s that these girls are given the freedom and encouragement to create art without permission, without perfection, without peer pressure. In that messy, liberating process of creating something that’s truly theirs, these girls figure out that they are enough in all that they do.

And isn’t that always the bottom line? We thought so, too.”

A Touch Of Understanding

November 18, 2019

A Touch of Understanding received a grant to support one day of in-school disability awareness workshops at four schools. The mission of A Touch of Understanding is to encourage acceptance and respect for all individuals and to minimize the discrimination, bullying and misunderstanding experienced by children and adults who are perceived as different for any reason, but especially for those with disabilities.

A Touch of Understanding helps share Dr. Buscaglia‘s view of loving everyone despite any differences. They have several students who have benefited from the workshops being presented at their schools and have gone on to help make the same presentations in schools.

Care Through Touch

November 12, 2019

“Last week St. Ignatius College Preparatory had their Solidarity Dinner event to culminate the immersion cycle for this past summer’s students who do immersion programs in the Tenderloin. They invited one of their students from the Tenderloin Immersion, Brian Hoy, to serve as one of the MCs. In his short testimony, he mentions Mary Ann and how impacted he was by learning the skill of giving hand massages. Below is his testimony:

My name is Brian Hoy and I’ll also be one of your MCs tonight. I would like to extend a special welcome to the juniors and their parents who are here to learn about immersion for next summer. Let’s welcome our guests with a round of applause!

This summer, I went on immersion to San Francisco’s Tenderloin neighborhood. The drive from my South City suburb to the Tenderloin is only about 30 minutes, but the two neighborhoods are worlds apart. We spent two weeks, not doing service, but rather focused on getting to know different facets of the Tenderloin community.

By far one of the most unique experiences on my immersion was learning to give hand massages. I hadn’t done this for friends or family, much less strangers. On immersion, our group spent time with a woman named MaryAnn Finch from an organization called Care Through Touch that provides healing touch to people who are isolated because of income, age, or illness. MaryAnn was amazing because she taught us how touch can be therapeutic, especially for people who have experienced trauma or homelessness. After learning this skill, I had the opportunity to give hand massages to guests at the St. Francis Living Room in the Tenderloin.

The guests at St. Francis had never had this experience before and they were excited to receive the hand massages. I formed an instant connection with people that I did not expect. I even got lots of compliments on my hand massages!

On immersion, a lot of my learning was about myself. I learned that the limits I set for myself are not the limits that I need to stick to. I was actually excited to give hand massages at the St. Francis Living Room. Being open to new experiences and people that I wouldn’t normally interact with, I discovered that I’m not as closed off as I thought I was. Immersion helped me find a sense of community in a neighborhood that most Bay Area residents usually avoid.

Every year Mary Ann participates in these immersion programs as do many other of our volunteers who bring in other immersion groups to engage in the community and to serve those out on the streets. Mary Ann’s energy and presence sets the tone for how their students see the TL. As you can see, the work she does continues to have ripple effects for months after!”

Pacific Opera Project

November 11, 2019

“It’s nearing the end of the work week at POP, and the closing of one of the biggest weeks in our history. The week began with the final two days of auditions for the 2020 Season. All told we heard over 400 singers. Since Sunday we’ve been working on casting decisions and offers will be going out soon. Get ready for some great singing this season! On Tuesday night we celebrated the kick-off for our 10th Anniversary season with POPagnaza 2019. “Special” hardly begins to describe the atmosphere and results of that night. If you weren’t there — we’re sorry!

But the biggest event of the week? This week POP took a huge step forward with the hiring of our first Executive Director, Matt Cook!

Matt most recently held positions in development and production with Wild Up New Music ensemble. There, he was responsible for overseeing operations for all events and fundraising activities. Matt produced performances on the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Fluxus Festival, the Ecstatic Music Festival in New York City, and lead partnerships with organizations such as the Martha Graham Dance Company. Previously, Matt worked with the Los Angeles Percussion Quartet in various roles as Managing Director, Project Manager, and Marketing Manager, leading the organization to international recognition in their field.

Matt is also a Grammy Award-winning performer. His work is heard on studio and film recordings and is seen live in performance with ensembles across the world. As an educator, Matt has been a featured clinician at several universities including Stanford and The San Francisco Conservatory of Music and maintained faculty positions at many local institutions. A native of Atlanta, Georgia, Matt holds degrees from the Oberlin Conservatory of Music and the California Institute of the Arts.

Of his new position, Cook says, “I’m thrilled to join Josh Shaw’s vision of creating affordable and entertaining Opera. Serving the entire Los Angeles community has been a dream of mine for many years and Pacific Opera Project is light years ahead of their peers in the effort to cultivate new audiences in the Facebook age. I couldn’t be more excited to join the team and meet so many new opera fans.”

Welcome to the team Matt.”

Art Without Limits

November 6, 2019

“When Jackie Rotman was 14, she had a dream about creating a dance outreach program for underserved youth. Others had told her she was too young to make it happen, but she was determined, and contacted Julie McLeod for help. Julie said, “Let’s go, Jackie!” With Julie’s mentorship and guidance, Jackie created Everybody Dance Now!, an after-school program where teens teach free dance classes to Santa Barbara youth, instilling self-esteem and encouraging healthy lifestyles.

Today, EDN! has its own nonprofit status and offers more than 80 classes per week in 8 cities. EDN! has served more than 20,000 youth across the nation and has offered programs in 25 different cities throughout throughout EDN!’s history. EDN! has been featured on MTV’s America’s Best Dance Crew. Jackie was highlighted as one of Glamour Magazine’s “Top 10 College Women” and has spoken at TEDx Stanford and other venues. She is a scholarship graduate of Stanford University and has been the Executive Director of Spark, a millennial philanthropic network focused on women and girls’ causes. Jackie is currently a concurrent graduate student obtaining her Masters in Business Administration at Stanford and Masters in Public Administration at Harvard.

Jackie says, “I am so grateful for Julie and her incredible mentorship and friendship. Julie’s mentorship has had an exponential impact, and tens of thousands of students’ lives are now being touched through the work she helped foster.”
