UCLA Watts Leadership Institute

UCLA Watts Leadership Institute recieved a grant to directly support the 8 cohort organizations/10 individuals who are engaged in the second WLI cohort.  The funds will underwrite a portion of their expenses as they plan and implement community programming and community engagement activities during the 2021-2022 fiscal year.  The number of community members served by WLI will be determined by the individual cohort members as their programs develop.  Founded in 2016, WLI is a 10-year initiative of the Social Justice Research Partnership within the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs.  Drawing upon an innovative and engaging peer learning model, WLI directly addresses gaps in nonprofit knowledge, capacity and sustainability by supporting a cadre of community-based leader-mentors who will guide other leaders and small nonprofits in the future.  WLI works under the 501-C-3 status of the UCLA Luskin School of Public Affairs but receives no funding from them.

“As with cultural heritage efforts anywhere, there remains much to be done: expanding awareness of the creation myths and stories of indigenous Pacific Islander worlds and what are considered significant feats, features, and beings within them; making known indigenous Islander place names; bringing to light nuances of hundreds or thousands of years of interaction between Islanders and their environments, as well as customary lifeways and the smaller and larger events within them; creating awareness of shared Island and Islander history and connections among regional deities, peoples, societies, and cultures that transcend local divisions or national boundaries; highlighting indigenous and colonial histories from the indigenous Islander perspectives; and showcasing Islanders as they moved through time and space in their homelands but also as they continued their journeys to areas within other parts of the U.S.” Essay 12: Pacific Islanders in the US and their Heritage: Making Visible the Visibly Absent by Kelly G. Fit for the Cause

Gerry Kimball represented Fit 4 The Cause at the Community Conscience Spring Luncheon. This luncheon provided the Non-Profit Organization tenants an opportunity to get the word out about services available at the facility. Fit 4 The Cause is forever grateful to Community Conscience, and to Robin Britt, for all your support throughout our 10 years of service. Gerry got to meet Kelly White from Villa Esperanza one of the organizations we serve at Agoura Fiitness.

Walk With Sally

Journey Out

Journey Out is a Los Angeles-based nonprofit leading the fight for the freedom and survival of all those whose lives have been destroyed by sex trafficking or commercial sexual exploitation.

Our mission is to help victims of commercial sexual exploitation and sex trafficking leave a life of abuse and violence, overcome their fears, and empower them to reach their full potential and achieve their goals.

Fully committed to and believing in the incredible resilience of survivors and marginalized populations, we maintain a diverse staff, half of whom are survivors themselves. This creates a powerful model and bond between our staff and clients, who are able to walk and grow alongside someone who can relate to their lived experience on a deeper level.

Journey Out Programs and Services include:

  • law enforcement crisis response
  • providing emergency housing, food, and clothing
  • art therapy
  • clinical counseling
  • legal referrals
  • job training
  • Prostitution Diversion Program – court-approved diversion programming as an alternative to incarceration
  • domestic minor sex trafficking prevention programming
  • direct street outreach to those in the Life
  • community/agency education and training

Every person Journey Out has served is not only an individual success story, but also serves as a testament to the contribution we make to the fabric of our communities and the much-needed movement to end sexual exploitation.

Kids and Horses
