The mission of the Italian American Museum of Los Angeles (IAMLA) is to foster a deeper understanding of Southern California’s diverse heritage through research, historic preservation, exhibitions and educational programs that examine the history and continuing contributions of Italian Americans in multi-ethnic Los Angeles and the United States.

- Inspired by Dr. Buscaglia’s book The Fall of Freddie the Leaf, the IAMLA created a craft activity that involves children making memory lanterns for a lost loved one or pet.
-
The IAMLA has since presented this activity
on several occasions; approximately 800 children and 150 adults have participated
in the workshop.
- On this occasion, Italian American Museum of Los Angeles executive director Marianna Gatto read the book, A Boat for Peppe by Leo Politi, and was accompanied by guitarist and vocalist Jaqueline Fuentes, who led the participants through the musical portions of the book in song. Approximately 30 families attended the event. Each page of the book was projected overhead so that children could read along and better appreciate Politi’s artwork.
