This week, Los Angeles County Supervisor Sheila Kuehl was interviewed by artworxLA. Here’s a snippet of her interview.
awxLA: What role does art and creativity play in your career?
SK: I began acting when I was 7. One day in class I did a skit called the “Old Sleuth” and I was supposed to be the old sleuth’s assistant. I had no lines, I just made faces. People started to laugh. The more they laughed, the more faces I made. Of course I ruined the play. But, as luck would have it, an agent sent me on an interview for the first filmed TV series, “Trouble with Father.” I got the part and, suddenly, I was a child actor. For the next fifteen years, in three TV series, I experienced the joy and the freedom of creativity.

What is governing but the process of identifying problems and creatively finding solutions to those problems? Adrienne Rich, a favorite poet of mine, writes ‘politics is imagination or it is a treadmill.’ Creativity is an under-recognized, but important part of the work of government, crafting imaginative solutions to problems in people’s lives.”
