“In 1991 after the loss of four family members to cancer, Sheri Schrier founded Happy Hats for Kids (in Hospitals), a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. It broke her heart as she watched helplessly as the physical pain and the emotional trauma of hair loss and drugs debilitated her loved ones. She set out on a mission to put smiles back on the faces of hospitalized children with cancer and other serious illnesses with entertaining activities and events. Parents also suffer, so Sheri’s quest was to serve the entire family with stimulating interactive programs.
Our unique Hero Club program provides each hospitalized child upon admission a gift package containing a whimsical, felt Hero Hat and a coordinating 60 page Hero Club bilingual, educational story/activity/coloring book with crayons. The hat brings immediate smiles to the children’s faces and warms the hearts of their parents. The purpose of the interactive book is to calm the children and their families’ fears by explaining basic hospital procedures in a gentle and humorous manner using colorful illustrations. There are dozens of thought provoking, fun activities including word games and illustrated jokes. The kids learn that courage and bravery comes from within and each child is truly a “HERO.”
